Well, well, what a decade it was for Video Gaming, the 1990s, where do you start, WHERE DO YOU START? …well, we figured we start here…

The 1990s was a decade where video gaming came across a lot of transitioning, as this was the decade that video gaming saw it’s games go from the 2D format society had become accustomed to in the 1980s to the now “oh so” familiar 3D format that you see in a ton of video games nowadays, such games from that time include Super Mario 64, the first Tomb Raider, amongst others.

We also saw the decline of Arcade games, even though they were still quite popular in the early 1990s, because of the rise in popularity in home consoles, such as the Playstation (now known also as PS1), Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn. Plus, we also had, how could we forget, the release of handheld consoles, such a great example would be the Game Boy (blimey, doesn’t that make us who were around then older?).

We also witnessed the rise in various video game genres during this decade, these included survival horror (such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill), stealth games (such as Metal Gear Solid), role-playing games (such as Final Fantasy VII), fighting games (such as Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha, Tekken 1, Tekken 2, Tekken 3, Soul-Blade) amongst other genres and games.

So the 1990s, when you really think about it, laid the groundwork for the video games you see today, and yes, looking back on that decade makes us MadSluggers feel old…
